Athletics Recap: Summer Tournament Results
Our student-athletes competed in their first inter-program tournament this summer. The results were impressive — but the growth we witnessed off the scoreboard was even better.
More Than a Scoreboard
This past weekend, Y.C.A.M.P. student-athletes competed in their first organized tournament against other youth programs in Pinellas County. The energy was electric, the competition was fierce, and every single one of our students left the court or field a little taller than when they arrived.
Tournament Highlights
Across three sports — basketball, flag football, and track — our athletes demonstrated the discipline and teamwork they've been building since the program launched.
Basketball: Our 7th and 8th grade squad went 3-1 in pool play, advancing to the semifinals before a hard-fought loss in overtime. The composure they showed in the fourth quarter — down by six — was a direct reflection of the mental toughness work we do in practice.
Flag Football: First-year participants. First tournament. First win. The flag football team secured a victory in their opening game and finished the day 2-2 — a result that far exceeded expectations for a brand-new squad.
Track & Field: Three individual podium finishes, including a first-place finish in the 400m by a 9th grader who had never competed in organized athletics before joining Y.C.A.M.P.
The Bigger Picture
Tournaments matter — but they're not the point. The point is what happens when a student who has never been part of a team discovers what it feels like to compete for something bigger than themselves.
We saw that this weekend. Many times over.
